Workflow build ANS exam

Updated on

Workflows are not supported in your browser.
Please use a recent version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari to display this page.

The purpose of this workflow is to help the teacher prepare a test in ANS. All steps relevant to the teacher are described here. By following the steps in this workflow, you can ensure that the test is prepared correctly and that the test administration runs smoothly.

Below is a schematic representation of the steps for preparing an ANS test. Each step is then explained. Do you have any questions after using this workflow? Please consult the Digital Test Support Officer of your study program.

Check in Osiris type Digital test

The key user Osiris is informed by the teacher which type of test (Ans, Ans Software, Möbius, etc.) should be organized. Usually this is already correctly registered in Osiris, but in case of changes compared to the previous academic year it may be necessary to adjust Osiris.

Do students need to use software during the test? Make sure this is registered in Osiris. The key user can enter this in Osiris under Type digital test (menu 1.1.21, see image below).

Use Question Bank

To manage your exam exercises, it is advisable to use an item bank in ANS. You can then also compose a test from your item bank.

Do you not yet have an item bank in ANS? Then request one via the Digital Test Support (DTO-er) of your program, via [email protected] or via [email protected].

Do you want more information about item banks? Then take a look at the ANS Help Center

Create exercises

Within your item bank you can create assignments and add different types of questions and/or content to it. How this works is explained in detail in the ANS Help Center.

Make Question Bank Exam

After creating assignments in your item bank, you can create an item bank test.

How this works is explained in detail in the ANS Help Center

Synchronize Assignment

After you have created an item bank test, you can synchronize it with your subject test. How this works is explained in detail in the ANS Help Center

Permitted Websites

If other websites are used during the test, such as wetten.overheid.nl, www.wolframalpha.com, online-python.com, etc., this must be reported to the Exam Centre. To do this, send an email with the request for this 'whitelisting' to [email protected]. The Exam Centre will then ensure that the website is made accessible during the test.

Enter Settings in ANS

When the course assignment is filled with exercises, the correct settings can be entered and a number of checks can be performed. The steps describe how you can do this thoroughly.

1. Are there two test takings?

One for the main group and one for the students with extra time provision.

2. Are students enrolled for the test?

3. Fill in Digital Aids and Appliances

digital notepad, calculator and spell checker via Settings - Accessibility

4. Other Aids and Appliances

Other physical aids and appliances should be entered under: Settings - General - Description. This only concerns aids that cannot be enabled within the test itself.

Do not forget to click Update!

The information in the description is readable for students prior to the test. The information is also passed on to the invigilators by the Exam Centre. You can also leave information here that is relevant to the invigilator.

Moreover, you can leave the telephone number where you can be reached during the test. Please note: the number is then available to both invigilators and students.

5. Can students also download and open the attachment during the test?

Then set this in the attachments.

Note! For regular ANS exams, only PDF downloads can be opened. If other documents need to be downloaded and opened, the exam must be organized as 'ANS Software'. See also step 1 ('Check in Osiris type Digital test').

You can edit the attachment by clicking on the 3 dots and make the attachment downloadable.

6. Show result after the test

for showing results after submitting the test, there are several options:

a) show no result

b) show only points

c) show  marks and points

How to set this up is described below:

a) Show no result after the test:

do not fill in anything for 'show provisional result immediately after submitting'.

b) only show points:

Please note: this works in two steps:

- Turn on 'Show preliminary result immediately after submission'

- Then set the Mark calculation to 'None'

c) Show marks and points:

in this case also choose the desired Mark calculation type (see image above)

7. Enable readspeaker

Go to Settings - Integrations

and choose the right language:

8. Shuffle

In ANS answers and exercises can be shuffled:

To shuffle the answers, make sure the checkbox is selected for: 'shuffle the answer alternatives for each question'.

NB: this is only possible for multiple choice and multiple answer exercises.

In order to shuffle the exercises, go to FLOW

then, click Shuffle flow groups

9. allow comments after the test

Advice: always enable comments after the test. This is the way for students to leave feedback about the test. If students see inaccuracies or have comments about the test, they can leave them here and the teacher can read this in ANS. The supervisor will also always refer the student to the comment field when the student has comments about the test.

Go to Test instructions

and check the box for allow comments after the test.

Don't forget to click Update!

Test your exam

Please note: this is one of the most important steps in this workflow!

Make the test yourself! Track down errors in your test by making the test completely through the eyes of the student. You can do this by clicking on the 'Preview' button. Below you will find a description of the points you should pay attention to during this check.

◦ Take the entire test yourself carefully and attentively.

◦ If possible, have a colleague take your test as well. Four eyes see more than two!

What do I pay attention to when checking my test?

Check whether the test can be made properly by students:

  • Are there no inaccuracies in the question?

  • Are all items in the right place?

  • Do all open questions have an input field?

  • Are numeric input fields set to 'numeric'?

  • Are there no duplicate questions and/or answers in a Multiple Choice test?

  • In case of shuffling questions and/or answers in a Multiple Choice test: is the structure still correct or is there a lack of a logical sequence of questions/answers?

  • In the case of attachments: does the docreader (on the right of the screen with the test) show all pages of the attachments properly?

  • Are all images in the test easy to read?

  • Can the software files (Excel, Word, etc.) be opened properly?

Once you have checked everything thoroughly, you can set the test to the 'Assigntment previewed and approved' label

The Exam center will then enter School Year settings if necessary, set the location restrictions, and ensure that the permitted resources on the exam description are communicated to the invigilators. This will happen a week in advance. Once this is done, the Exam center will set the label to 'ready to go' and the test can be administered.

Congratulations, you are done!
