Using labels in ANS

Updated on

This article contains a description of the various labels and the corresponding protection rules for assignments and tests that can be used in ANS.

There are 3 kinds of labels in ANS:

  • Labels for assignments
  • Labels for item bank tests
  • Labels for course tests

Labels for items/assignments

Labels on assignments are set within the settings of an item bank and can thus theoretically differ from one item bank to another. However, we recommend using the default labels to make working in multiple, different item banks easier. The default labels are as follows:

  • Concept/Draft
  • Review needed
  • Revision needed
  • Accepted

The labels can be used for mutual collaboration within an item bank. Additional agreements on how to use the labels would still have to be made. For example:

  • Concept/Draft: Newly developed assignments are automatically given this label and must therefore be assessed. After the initial assessment, one of the following labels can be attached to the item.
  • Review needed: This label is attached to the assignment if it also needs to be assessed by another colleague. You can assign this action to a colleague via the comments/remarks.
  • Revision needed: This label is attached to an assignment if another colleague needs to make revisions. You can assign this action to a colleague via the comments/remarks.
  • Accepted: If the assignment is approved, this label can be attached to the item.

Only if truly necessary can you add other labels here as a teacher team.

Teacher teams can decide for themselves whether they want to attach protection rules to the labels. That means that when you attach a label to a task, the protection rules associated with that label apply to that item. Protection rules for items include:

  • Turn off editing of assignments
  • Turn off editing of assessment scheme
  • Turn off editing of learning objectives
  • Turn off addition of assignments to tests

This allows you, for example, to prevent assignments labelled Concept from being added to tests, or that assignments that have already been accepted are changed again.

Labels for item bank tests

Labels for item bank tests can also be set within an item bank. These can also be used for mutual cooperation within the item bank (including with other educational institutions, hence determined per item bank and not institution-wide). The same standard labels used for the assignments are available. You can change or add labels here too, but we recommend using the standard labels as much as possible.

A teacher team can also attach a protection rule to a label here. The only protection rule you can attach to an item bank test label is to make it impossible to modify assignments.

If you schedule or synchronise item bank tests with a label to a course, the item bank test label disappears, and the course test gets a new default label for course tests.

Labels for course tests

Course test labels are set institution-wide and are the same for every Hanze user of Ans. They can be determined Hanze-wide to suit the process we want to follow. Labels that are currently available are:

  • Concept/Draft (formerly empty): By default, this label is attached to automatically created course tests and item bank tests scheduled for the course. Outside Ans, agreements are needed as to who will assess and possibly change which test draft.
  • Revision needed: After reviewing the test draft, this label can be attached to show  that another colleague also needs to assess or modify the test. This requires agreements about how this colleague will do this. The TC can also attach this label to a test after a review, such as for example when a test or cover sheet has not yet been filled. In this case, a comment would be added to Examscheduler, which is visible via PowerBI to the planners of the programmes. They can then inform the teacher about it. If the test and the cover sheet are filled, but something has to be changed in the test, the TC will also send an e-mail to the lecturer.
  • Ready for Preview: This label is attached to the test after the teacher has finished developing the test, has prepared all the settings and added information about the test (the cover sheet). This is how the teacher en other involved teachers are informed that the test can be checked. The TC checks the test on two aspects (locationrestrictions and Schoolyear-settings) and sets it up 2 weeks before the test is administered. This is not dependent on the label.
  • Ready to go: TC has checked the test and attaches this label to the test to signal his approval.
  • Final grades / Final Grades Final Projects: When the test has been administered and assessed and the final grades are in Osiris, someone from the programme (the teacher or the digital test support officer, depending on how the school/programme has organised this) can 'freeze' the test by attaching the label Final grades / Final Grades Final Projects to the test. Both labels have the following protection rules, so that the test can no longer be changed:

- Turn off editing of assignments

- Turn off editing of grading scheme

- Turn off editing of learning objectives

- Turn off editing of assessment

- Turn off editing of grade calculation

- Turn off editing of results

- Turn off editing of discussions

This label signals that the test can be archived

The label Final Grades Final Projects has an additional protection rule (Disable anonymising results) which means that tests with this label will not be anonymized. The label Final Grades Final Projects will not be used much for the time being, as most work in Ans is not a final project. Note! When this label is attached to a test while it is not a final project, then test results are kept too long and not anonymised in time.
