This article explains how to set up plagiarism checking for an assignment. It uses the plagiarism checker Turnitin.
Edit a new or existing assignment
You set the plagiarism checking options for an assignment that you create new, or you have an existing assignment where these options have not yet been set.
- To create a new assignment, follow the steps in How do I create an assignment?
In that process, you will naturally reach the point where you set the plagiarism checking options, which are further explained on this page.
Do you want to set up plagiarism checking for an existing assignment?
- Go to Course Tools in the navigation bar of your course.
- Click on Assignments.
- Click the arrow next to the assignment and then click on Edit Assignment.
Set the due date
Keep the following in mind:
- It is recommended to always set a Due Date. This ensures that Turnitin will also check for overlap between students' work in the current assignment ('collusion check').

To ensure that Turnitin Similarity scores are calculated correctly and that a collusion check takes place, we strongly advise always setting a Due Date.
After the Due Date has passed, students still have the option to submit their assignment, but these will be marked as 'late.'
Additionally, due dates help provide clear deadlines for students.
Submission settings for plagiarism checking
Open the options for Submission & Completion on the right side of the screen and:
- Select File submission as the Submission type.
- Indicate whether a student is allowed to upload one or multiple files.
- Select Compatible with Turnitin under Allowable File Extensions.
- Choose how many submissions are allowed:
- There are two options related to whether or not there is a due date
- With a due date, we allow unlimited submissions until the due date, as students may make mistakes when uploading. See the table at the bottom of this article. For this option, you need to check one of the following two options in Brightspace:
• All submissions are kept: All submissions are stored; or
• Only the most recent submission is kept: Only the most recent submission is stored. Note: This last option carries risks. Older versions are overwritten, and the student's development is not visible.
- Without a due date, we only allow a single submission: For this option, you need to check the following in Brightspace
-
Only one submission allowed
-
Only one submission allowed
- With a due date, we allow unlimited submissions until the due date, as students may make mistakes when uploading. See the table at the bottom of this article. For this option, you need to check one of the following two options in Brightspace:

If you choose All submissions are kept, Turnitin will generate a similarity report for each submission, and all submissions will be saved.
If you choose Only the most recent submission, Turnitin will generate a new report each time.
The option Only one submission allowed is not recommended, as something unexpected can always go wrong when the student submits.
Enable Turnitin
On the right side of the screen, open the options for Evaluation & Feedback and click on Manage Turnitin under Turnitin Integration.

The following pop-up screen will appear:
- Check Enable Similarity Report for this folder. It may take a moment for the other options to become available.
- Under Display, the option Allow learners to see similarity scores in their submission folder is unchecked by default. If you want to show the similarity score to students, check this option.
- Leave Submission Checked on Automatic similarity checking on all submissions. This will save you a lot of work.
- Then click on More Options.
The first time you click on More Options, you will need to accept the terms and conditions of Turnitin.
Turnitin More Options
In the attachment, you will find the pros and cons for each option in Turnitin outlined
Scroll down until you see Similarity Report.
- Check the setting for generating reports:
- Option 1: Generate reports immediately (students cannot resubmit) = the recommended option for assignments without a due date. Only one submission is allowed. A similarity report is generated immediately, without a collusion check.
- Option 2: Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until due date) = option for assignments with a due date. For assignments with a due date, students can submit indefinitely until the due date (unless only one submission is allowed). A similarity report is generated for each submission. After the set due date, a collusion check will also be performed.
-
Option 3: Generate reports on due date (students can resubmit until due date) = option for assignments with a due date. For assignments with a due date, students can submit indefinitely until the due date (unless only one submission is allowed). After the set due date, a similarity report is generated with a collusion check.
For both option 2 and 3: If you have set in the assignment settings that only one submission is allowed, the student will not have the option to resubmit in Turnitin.
- Determine what the submitted work should be compared against.
- Optional: If students fill out a template that includes, for example, a long assignment description or case study, you can optionally upload this document to exclude that text from the similarity check. See here for more information.
- Optional: Click Save these settings for future use to save your settings for future assignments.
- Before uploading a template, it is advisable to check this option first and then click Submit. This way, your template will not be used in other assignments.•
- If you have uploaded a template, do not check this option, but just click Submit.

What is Collusion Check? Turnitin More Options
When students submit their work, Turnitin always compares it with internet sources or previously submitted work from other students in different assignments. Collusion Check simply means that Turnitin will also check for plagiarism between the students' work in the current assignment.
Adjust visibility and save
- Optional: Check if the assignment is visible to students; otherwise, your students will not be able to view the assignment. You can change this at any time.
- Finally, click Save and Close to return to the Assignment overview.

Share the Similarity Report
If you want to share a similarity report, you can download the report as a PDF and manually share it with the student. This can be done by opening the report and using the download icon, as described in the guide for downloading a Similarity Report.
Which file types are supported by Turnitin?
The following file types are compatible with Turnitin:

Appendix: Turnitin Options and Scenarios
