How do I set up a resit?

Updated on

Advice on resit in Brightspace

When using resits within the same course, it is advised to have the resits in a separate submission point. This because when using the same submission point, it becomes unclear what the feedback was for the first attempt compared to the second attempt.

It is also possible to conduct resits in a new Brightspace course, in the next quarter, semester, or academic year. In this case, no action is needed, and this guide does not apply

Set up a resit

You can copy the original assignment to create a resit with the same settings as the first attempt.

Read here how to create an Assignment.

  • Go to Course Tools > Assignments in your navigation bar.
  • Click on the arrow next to the assignment.
  • Click on Copy Assignment.
  • Give the resit a clear name.
  • Adjust the maximum points. This number should be the same as the first attempt. Don't forget to adjust the Due Date if it has been set. The resit will appear in the Grade Book when you change Not in Grade Book to In Grade Book.

Click Save & Close.

Adjusting grade item settings in the Gradebook

If you want the final grade to be automatically calculated, taking into account any resit, you need to set this up in your Gradebook. For example, by using a Formula Calculated grade.

Make sure you have gone through the Setup Wizard. Then create an appropriate formula in the Calculated Grade column.
