How do I create a Teams environment from a course in Brightspace?

Updated on

Before using this method of Teams, consider what you want to use Teams for. If you only want to set up an online lecture or a meeting with a large group of students, please read these instructions: How do I create an online class in Teams?

If you want to use Teams for collaborating on files or creating different channels, then follow the instructions below.

Creating a Teams environment

From within a Brightspace course, it is possible to create a Teams environment. Students enrolled in the Brightspace course will automatically be linked to this Teams environment. Synchronization takes place once a day around 10:30 AM. New enrollments in the Brightspace course will be added to the Teams environment the following day.

You can use this environment, for example, to collaborate on files and create different channels.

Instructions on how to create such a Teams environment can be found below.

When working on files in the Teams environment that will eventually be graded, these files should be submitted in Brightspace.

Go to the course in Brightspace for which you want to create a Teams environment. Then scroll down until you see the Microsoft Teams widget on the right-hand side. Click on Create Course Team.

Then check Automatically add instructors to all channels and click on Create Course Team.

The Teams environment is now being created, which may take a few minutes. Once the environment has been created, you will receive a notification in Teams, and you will see the newly created environment appear in Teams.

You can access the environment directly from Microsoft Teams, but also from within the course. After the environment has been created, a link will appear in the widget that takes you directly to the Teams environment.

If you forgot to check Automatically add instructors to all channels, you can click on Edit Settings and enable the checkbox afterwards. Then click on Save and Resync, and the instructors will be added.

Changing the name of a Teams environment

The name of the Teams environment is generated automatically. If you want to change the name, you can do so as follows:

Go to Teams and find the environment whose name you want to change. Click the three dots next to the team name and select Manage Team.

Next, go to Settings at the top and click Edit.

You can then change the name under Team Name. Click Done once you’ve updated the name.

Deleting a Teams environment

When you want to delete the Teams environment, follow the steps below.

First, locate the Teams environment, click the three dots next to it, and then select Delete team.

Check the box and select Delete team

The Teams environment has now been deleted, but a backend connection still remains. Next, send an email to [email protected] including the Course Offering Code, so the connection can be removed.

You can find the Course Offering Code under Course Admin > Course Offering Information.

If you don’t do this, the Teams environment will be automatically recreated.
