In this article, you will learn what Awards are and how to distribute them to students either automatically or manually.
You can use Awards to reward students for a skill or behavior that is not graded but is useful and desirable. You can also use Awards to reward a student for achieving a certain score. In this way, Awards can motivate students to learn more, display specific behaviors, or develop particular skills. For each Award you create, you can specify for which course it should be used and whether other instructors can use the Awards in their courses. You can also add Awards created by other instructors to your own course if they have shared them.
You can distribute these Awards either automatically or manually.
Automatically giving Awards
It is possible to have Brightspace automatically award a student when they achieve a certain score or complete a specific activity. To set this up, you need to attach release conditions to the award.
Navigate to Course Admin in the course navigation bar.
Click on Awards, then navigate to Course Awards.

Click on Edit Properties to adjust the settings of the award.
If you don't see this option, check Add or create awards
- Select Award hidden until earned. This means that students will only see the award once they have earned it.
- Click on Create under Release Conditions to add release conditions. If you add multiple release conditions, you can use the dropdown menu to choose whether a student must meet all conditions (All conditions must be met) or just one (Any conditions must be met).
- Click Save.
You can also add credits to an award via Edit Properties. These credits are not related to grades in the Grades tool, and you CANNOT attach release conditions to them. Therefore, you should leave the field below the credits empty.
Manually giving Awards
- Navigate to Course Admin in the course navigation bar.
- Click on Course Admin and then on Awards. You will be automatically redirected to the Awards homepage: Classlist Awards.

- Use the drop-down menu to choose which award you want to issue.
- Enter the reason for granting the award. Note: This will be visible to students.
- You can see which students you have selected under Selected users.
- Click on Issue. You will now return to the overview.
You will see a summary of the awards that have been issued to the selected students.
