How can I grant a student an exemption?

Updated on

When you want to grant one or more students an exemption for a specific assignment or for multiple assignments, you can do this in Brightspace via the gradebook.

It is important to process this correctly in the gradebook so that the grade is not included in any final grade calculation.

To grant a student an exemption, go to Grades > Enter Grades.

If the grade item is used as a release condition for another component in your course, this condition will no longer be triggered when an exemption is granted. Therefore, make sure that you manually release that component for the student(s) with the exemption.

For one grade item

If you want to grant an exemption to multiple students for a specific assignment, click on the chevron next to the grade item for which you want to grant exemptions and select Enter Grades.

Then select the student(s) you want to grant an exemption to and click Exempt.

If you want to revoke the exemption, select the student(s) again and click Unexempt.

For one student

If you want to grant an exemption to a single student for a specific assignment or multiple assignments, go to Enter Grades, navigate to the student, and click the chevron next to the student.

Then select Bulk Edit Exemptions.

Then select the assignment(s) for which you want to grant the student an exemption and click Save and Close.
