Course integration Osiris > Brightspace

Updated on

The table below shows how the course integration between Osiris and Brightspace will work.

In other words, it explains how data is transferred from Osiris to Brightspace and what the conditions are for providing data to Brightspace.

Creating Courses in Brightspace

For each course edition (a unique combination of course code, academic year, and start period, with one or more teaching formats registered), a Course Offering is created in Brightspace. This is the combination on which a student enrolls.

Courses are created via the integration once the following conditions in Osiris are met:

  • The course in the academic year has the status final.
  • The course in the academic year has the attribute course to LMS set to ‘Yes’.
  • The course is offered in the current or a future academic year.

The course will then be available in Brightspace the next day.

As long as the above conditions are met, the course editions are managed via the integration, and both lecturers and students are automatically synchronized. If any of the conditions are no longer met (for example, if course to LMS is set to No), the integration will stop, and no further data will be delivered from Osiris.

Courses created by the integration in Brightspace cannot be deleted by the integration. If a course needs to be removed from Brightspace, a request can be submitted to Functional Management Brightspace.

When the course is automatically created in Brightspace, the following data fields are populated:

  • Code = coursecode-academicyear-startperiod
This is a composite code based on data from Osiris. It must be unique and cannot be changed.
    Example: MIVP22MOD13-2024-P3
  • Name = imported from Osiris. This is the full name of the course.
The full name is visible in the course catalog and is what students see when enrolling. The language version (Dutch or English) is chosen based on the course’s language of instruction. This name cannot be changed.
  • Hanze Mastercourse
This is automatically imported into the Course Offering. The Dutch or English variant is selected based on the course’s language of instruction.
  • Start Date
This is by default set to the start date of the start period. If this date is in the future, the student will see the course greyed out (not accessible) in My Courses. Instructors can adjust this date.
  • End Date
This is by default set to September 30 of the academic year + 2 years. After this date, the course becomes historical and students will see it greyed out (not accessible). Instructors will still have access to the course. This date can be modified by instructors.

Adding instructors

Staff members who have the role CONTACT PERSON and/or LECTURER in the Osiris course are automatically added (enrolled) as instructors to the corresponding Course Offerings in Brightspace.

When an instructor is added or removed from the course in Osiris, the instructor will be enrolled or unenrolled in the Brightspace course no later than the following day.

It is also possible to manually add instructors to the Brightspace course. These manually added instructors will not be overwritten by the integration.

Adding students

Students and participants who are enrolled in a teaching activity or an test belonging to a course edition are added (enrolled) as Learner to the corresponding Course Offering in Brightspace.

When a student/participant is enrolled or unenrolled in the course in Osiris, they will be enrolled or unenrolled in the Brightspace course no later than the following day.

It is possible to manually add students to the Brightspace course. These manually added students will not be overwritten by the integration.
