This article explains why certain settings under More Options are necessary, and more importantly, what the consequences are when these settings are selected.
After clicking on More Options, a pop-up screen will appear stating that some settings can no longer be changed.
Submission settings

Options Submit papers:
- Standard paper repository: Recommended setting, best result for similarity scores. This is the default setting. Because submissions are stored in the standard repository, they are added to the global database, allowing similarity checks to be performed against these documents.
- Institution paper repository: Optional setting, no impact on similarity scores. Although this setting might seem useful, if everyone chose this option, cross-checks between universities and colleges would no longer be possible. Therefore, this option is disabled for Saxion.
- Do not store the submitted paper: Optional setting, no impact on similarity scores. This setting is useful if you want a similarity score but do not want the document to be stored in Turnitin. This setting is only useful if you want to check draft versions of documents for similarity.
Other options under Submission Settings:
-
Allow submission of any file type:
- The settings cannot be changed here because the file type is determined by the assignment submission setting.
-
Allow late submission:
- This setting cannot be changed here, as it is determined by the submission and due date of the assignment in Brightspace.
Compare against:

Make sure all options are checked to get an accurate similarity score. An option that is not checked may result in a low similarity score, or even a score of 0%. Remember that you can always exclude sources yourself after the similarity check.
Similarity Report

If you don't change anything here, the first option will be enabled by default. So, when creating an assignment with Turnitin, make sure to check which option is most suitable for this assignment.
-
Generate Similarity Reports for student submission:
- Generate reports immediately (students cannot resubmit): This generates a similarity report immediately, but does not compare student work within the same assignment. This is the recommended option for assignments without a due date. Only one submission is allowed. A similarity report is generated right away, without a collusion check.
- Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until due date): Once a student submits something, you will see the plagiarism score immediately. After the due date has passed, the collusion scores will also be visible. This option is for assignments with a due date. For assignments with a due date, students can submit indefinitely until the due date (unless only one submission is allowed). A similarity report is generated with each submission. After the set due date, a collusion check is also performed.
- Generate reports on due date (students can resubmit until due date): This option is for assignments with a due date. For assignments with a due date, students can submit indefinitely until the due date (unless only one submission is allowed). After the set due date, a similarity report is generated with a collusion check. This is the most recommended setting. Disadvantage: If grading is done before the due date has passed, the similarity report will not be available yet.
-
Allow students to view Similarity Reports:
- This setting cannot be changed here, but it can be adjusted in the Turnitin tab in the Brightspace assignment.
-
Exclude bibliographic materials: Optional setting, has a mild impact on similarity scores.
- See here what is excluded from the comparison when you enable this setting.
-
Exclude quoted materials: Optional setting, has a mild impact on similarity scores.
- See here what is excluded from the comparison when you enable this setting.
-
Exclude small sources: Optional setting, has a mild impact on similarity scores.
- With this setting, sources with fewer than a certain number of words are excluded. For example, filtering with 10 words ensures that sources with fewer than 10 words are not included in the comparisons.
Exclude assignment template

This feature allows you to exclude the assignment itself from the similarity check. This is useful when students use the same assignment, where they need to answer questions, and the questions are part of their submission.
Additional settings

Finally: Save these settings for future use. This setting applies to you personally. When you create another assignment with Turnitin, the settings will be remembered
