How can I check an assignment for plagiarism without the student submitting it themselves?

Updated on

Sometimes you want to check an assignment for plagiarism without the student submitting it themselves. Turnitin has a Quick Submit feature. The article below explains how you can use your own workspace to check a product for overlap with other works.

Step 1: Go to your own Sandbox, create an assignment, and set up Turnitin.

  1. Click on the 'Waffle' and search for your own Sandbox, or do this via the My Courses widget.
  1. Create an assignment, see this guide for instructions.
  2. Set up plagiarism detection for the assignment, refer to this guide.
  3. Click on More Options.
  1. In the Submission settings, choose the option Do not store the submitted papers. This is to prevent high overlap if the student submits the work later on their own.
  2. Choose the option Generate reports immediately under Similarity Report.

Click Save

Step 2: Submit the product as a Preview Learner.

Go to the course as a Preview Learner. You can find instructions on how to do this in this guide.

Submit the file as a Preview Learner: Click on Course Tools > Assignments, then select the assignment you just created and submit the file there.

To exit the course as a Preview Learner, click on the "X" (the close button) at the top right to leave the Preview mode.

Step 3: Review the plagiarism score and the similarity report.

  1. Go to Grades and find the Preview Learner who has submitted something.
  2. Click on the icon of the submitted work.

Review the plagiarism score by clicking on the percentage. To learn how to interpret the similarity report, you can read more here.

Step 4: Delete the submission.

It is preferred to remove the document after you have checked it. This is because a Preview Learner is a generic account that anyone can use.
