Click on Course Tools, Assignments in the navbar.

Click on New Assignment

- Give the assignment a title. This will be displayed on the Assignments homepage.
-
Set the maximum points for the assignment by entering the Grade Out Of value. Once you enter the Grade Out Of, you can choose whether and how the grade will appear in the Gradebook. The options Edit or Link to Existing refer to the grade item you want to link the assignment to. Clicking on this will show 4 options:
- In Gradebook: A new grade item will be created.
- Edit or Link to Existing: This allows you to create a new grade item, select a grade scheme and type, or link to an existing grade item.
- Not in Gradebook: The assignment can be graded, but the score will not appear in the Gradebook.
- Reset to Ungraded: The assignment will not be graded.
- Set the due date. Important: If you select Now as the due date, the Assignment Type and Submission Type cannot be changed. By clicking Now, the deadline will be activated. Communicate the due date to your students in advance.
-
You can modify the availability for the assignment by adding a Start Date and/or End Date. By adding one of these, the availability will be adjusted before or after these dates, depending on your selection:
- In the Start Date and End Date fields, you can enter the period during which the assignment is available to students. It might be useful to fill in the End Date if you already know that you will start grading from that date, but you don't want the grades to be visible to students right away. You will also need to hide the assignment. See also Hiding grades from students.
- Release Conditions: You can indicate that a student must complete certain content or another assignment before this assignment becomes available.
- Special Access: You can specify if certain students are allowed to submit after the normal submission period.
- Add instructions for the assignment by typing them into the HTML editor box under Instructions.
-
You can add additional information:
- Click on File upload to upload a file.
- Click on Attach Link to Existing Activity to link the assignment to an existing activity in Brightspace.
- Click on Attach Weblink to insert an external link.
- Click on Record Audio to record or upload an audio file.
- Click on Record Video to record or upload a video.
Types of assignments

-
Select the Assignment Type:
- Click on Individual assignment if students need to submit the work individually and if the work will be assessed individually.
- Choose Group assignment if students need to submit the assignment as a group. Select the Group Category for the set of groups the assignment is intended for.
-
Select under Submission type in which format students should submit the assignment.
- File submission: Students submit the assignment by uploading a file (e.g., Word document, PDF, etc.).
- Text submission: Students can write and post a piece of text, submit a photo, or submit a link to their work. An HTML editor box is provided for these types of submissions. For example, a student could submit a link to an assignment where a website is required.
- On paper submission: Students submit the assignment via a paper document (hard copy). Students do not need to submit it in Assignments, but by using this option, you can still provide feedback in the Grade Book.
- Observed in person: You can provide feedback on an assignment completed in class or during a workshop. This could be feedback for a presentation or project. You can also give a grade afterward. Neither the instructor nor the student needs to upload a document in Assignments. This option allows you to still provide feedback in the Grade Book.
File submission

- Indicate whether students need to submit 1 or multiple files.
- Here, you have the option to specify if students must submit a particular type of file, for example, only a PDF.
- You can also specify whether you want to keep all submitted files, only one file, or just the most recent file.
Text submission

Indicate whether a student is allowed to submit multiple attempts, and if so, specify which attempt(s) will be retained
On paper submission and Observed in Person

Via the Marked as completed option, you specify when the assignment is considered complete. This can be done in the following ways:
- Manually by learners: Students manually mark the assignment as completed in Brightspace.
- Automatically on evaluation: The assignment is marked as completed when you assess the student's work.
- Automatically on due date: The assignment is marked as completed once the deadline has passed.

For File and Text submission, it is possible to enable notifications by entering your email address. When a student submits an assignment, you will receive a notification at the provided email address
