What are Learning Outcomes?
Brightspace offers a tool called Learning Outcomes, which makes it possible to define learning outcomes and/or related learning objectives and link them to different course components in Brightspace. Based on this, the progress of students on those learning outcomes within the course can be monitored. (At this moment, it is not yet possible to track Learning Outcomes across courses.) In addition, the achievement of a Learning Outcome under certain conditions can also serve as a release condition for making specific content (for example, an assignment) available.
Learning Outcomes can be created across courses by functional administrators. To request this, you can send an email to [email protected]. In your course, you can then either use (import) these outcomes or create course-specific ones yourself.
Creating Learning Outcomes
- Go to the Learning Outcomes tool via the Course Admin menu.
- Select Import Outcomes and then Import from Programme.
If Learning Outcomes have been created at the program level, you can select the ones relevant for your current Brightspace course here. - Use Add Outcome to add course-specific Learning Outcomes for the current Brightspace course.
Selecting an Achievement Scale
In Settings, choose the Achievement Scale you want to use to indicate student progress (add an image once achievement scales are set up in production).

Linking Learning Outcomes to Brightspace Learning Activities
You can link Learning Outcomes to (group)Assignments, Quizzes, and Discussions in Brightspace. To link a Learning Outcome, you must first click Create New. For (group)Assignments, this is the New Assignment button. When you have created a Learning Outcome in the Brightspace course, the following option will appear.
- Click Outcomes to select the Learning Outcomes you want to link to an assignment.

2. Click Save to confirm the link and complete the other assignment settings.
3. Repeat this process for all assignments in the Brightspace course.
Outcomes Coverage in Brightspace Content

- Click on Content in the navbar.
- Click on Outcomes alignment to see to what extent all Learning Outcomes are covered by learning activities.
This overview shows how often a Learning Outcome appears in Brightspace content items and where it has not yet been linked. This helps provide insight in Brightspace into whether Learning Outcomes are evenly represented in the linked content of a course. This option is not visible to students.
Linking Learning Outcomes to Rubrics
You can also link Learning Outcomes to rubrics to make it clear which Learning Outcomes are addressed in feedback and grading.
When Learning Outcomes have been created in a Brightspace course, you will see the option to link Learning Outcomes to a criterion when creating a rubric.

Grading Based on Learning Outcomes
If you have linked Learning Outcomes to learning activities and rubrics, you will see during grading that a Learning Outcome is attached. If you hover over it, you can see which one.

At the bottom of the rubric, you can score the Learning Outcome according to the chosen Achievement Scale.

Tracking Progress on Learning Outcomes
In the end, both instructor and student can view student progress on Learning Outcomes within a Brightspace course, including the feedback provided for each outcome across different assignments.
- In the Users menu, click Class Progress and select the student whose progress you want to view.
- Then click Learning Outcomes.

In this screen, you will see the student’s progress on the Learning Outcome and all feedback given on activities linked to that outcome (image to be replaced with a better one).

Instructors can also view overall progress for all students on the Learning Outcomes in the Mastery View.
- In the Grades menu, go to the Gradebook.
- Behind View Achievements by:, select Mastery View.

Using Learning Outcomes as a Release Condition
Learning Outcomes can also be used as a Release Condition. For example, making content available only if a student has achieved a certain Learning Outcome on an assignment.
Here’s an example of how to set a Release Condition for releasing content:

- Open Availability Dates & Conditions.
- Select Create New.

- Open the Condition Type menu and scroll down.
- Choose Outcome Achieved.

- Select a specific Outcome.
- Choose the condition for the level: should it be lower, equal to, or higher than the defined level?
- Select the level that applies.
- Click Create.
